From Bamboo Offices in Bali, Tech Startup Mozaik Media Announces Green School Experience Mobile Games & Innovative Learning Assessment Platform

Bali, Indonesia — Technology startup Mozaik Media (“Mozaik”) has secured its first US$300,000 in seed capital from a group of angel investors and is six months into the development of a bamboo-themed building creation game, the first in a series of fun and innovative Green School Experience mobile games. Mozaik is concurrently developing “Evalu8″, a proprietary, algorithm-based learning assessment platform, which will sit behind the company’s own products, as well as those of its partners.

Mozaik has entered into a partnership and licensing agreement with the internationally-renowned Green School in Bali and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Green School Experience mobile games will benefit the Green School scholarship fund for Indonesian students.

Green School, with its beautiful campus of open-air bamboo buildings set amidst Balinese forests and rice fields, was recently recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council as the “2012 Greenest School on Earth”.

Mozaik founder Beryl Jacobson noted, “Our Green School Experience line of mobile games was inspired by Green School’s mission, location and unique bamboo architecture. Mozaik was born out of our desire to make learning fun while at the same time weaving in concepts of environmental sustainability by leveraging our physical setting in Bali and our partnership with Green School. Though far afield from Silicon Valley, by launching a technology company from the heart of Green School in Bali, an unmatched place of inspiration and learning, Mozaik is making the Green School Experience accessible to the world.”

“We are very excited about our innovative partnership with Beryl Jacobson and the Mozaik team”, stated Green School Managing Director, Christopher Thompson (a 23-year veteran international product development and operations executive at video game publisher Electronic Arts). “Mozaik’s presence on campus gives our students a “hands-on” opportunity to see an environmentally-minded, technology-driven startup in action. Mozaik’s vision for developing fun and leading-edge “Learning Through Play” mobile games is a natural and synergistic fit with the Green School mission and vision, and we are thrilled that Mozaik’s commercial success will benefit Green School’s scholarship program for Indonesian students.”

Green School

Green School was founded by John and Cynthia Hardy, award-winning jewelers, sustainable business pioneers and 30-year residents of Bali. In founding Green School, the Hardys recognized a unique opportunity to create something truly inspiring and outside of the structural, conceptual, and physical limitations of many traditional schools. Green School recently appointed world-renowned educator Alan Wagstaff as “Learning Manager” who is presently working with faculty and staff to develop a student-centered curriculum within a school that has various cultural, entrepreneurial and environmental projects running through it. Green School currently has an enrolment of nearly 250 students from 25 different countries in classes ranging from pre-K to grade 12.

The US$300,000 in capital raised thus far constitutes the first half of Mozaik’s seed round; the second half is being raised now.

Given our focus on sustainability issues, it would be difficult to describe us as a dark horse contender for this honor, but this is still pretty amazing recognition from one of the world leaders in green education and building. GS Managing Director Chris Thompson noted that “While we’ve a great deal of attention and acclaim from around the world in our nearly four years of operation, this is really a singular honor. We are so thrilled to receive this award.”

At the ceremony, Rachel announced that the Center for Green Schools and the USGBC will also be sponsoring the education of one of our Balinese scholars for the 2012-2013 school year. We are very grateful for their generosity, as well as for their acknowledgement of our efforts. Huge thanks and terima kasih from Green School!

Video journalist and Green School parent Peter Wall made a great video of the Earth Day festivities here and the award presentation, which you can see below. Special thanks to Grade 8 student Lyyli Kennedy for the voiceover work!

The games aim to connects children and parents across the globe, in a fun way while helping the Green School continue to spread it’s vision and goal of educating our next generation of leaders. 100% of Green School proceeds benefit the Indonesian Scholarship Fund. We have many games in store inspired by life at Green School and soon we will be able to share them with the world!

In the meantime check out the Green School Bali website. http://greenschool.org

Green School is an amazing project, pioneering sustainability within education. It is pushing boundaries in schooling at a time when the world must review whether more of the same is acceptable. Its curriculum combines the academic rigor expected of schools and institutions of higher learning with hands-on experiential learning within a Green Studies & Creative Arts curriculum. This means that by holding onto the essential core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, Green School students will have doors open to them for whichever kinds of further learning and careers that they choose. It is preparing students to be critical and creative thinkers who are confident to champion the sustainability of the world and its environment.
